Best Seller and Helping a Friend

August 30, 2021

Last week was a pretty good week for me and my book for two reasons. First, my publisher informed me that my work, The Flight to Excellence: Soaring to New Heights in Business and Life, had made the Best Seller’s list in three categories at Amazon. Is that a big deal? No, but nice to have. I once congratulated a friend whose book had made the New York Times Best Seller’s list. He told me it was no big deal. I thought at the time, “It’s not if you have it.” Such is life.

The Longest Flight

August 23, 2021

It was Friday afternoon at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Air traffic was usually heavy, and we were taxiing out for our two-hour flight to Atlanta. There were thunderstorms all along the east coast, and we were hoping to get out before one came through and affected our flight. Halfway to the runway, the tower controller informed us that the airport was now closed for takeoffs because of storms on our departure route. Arrivals would continue to land because some airplanes were low on fuel. This was the beginning of one of the longest flights I ever had as a captain for Delta.

Positive Affirmation: Tell Yourself You’re Good

I just finished meeting with the son of a neighbor who desires to go to the Air Force Academy. He is a friendly kid and a bright kid, and I believe he has the potential to be a great cadet if he decides to pursue that goal seriously. I don’t know him that well, but I did detect a potential problem as we had our hour-long conversation. He doesn’t think he’s good enough to accomplish that goal.

Choosing Your Boss

August 2, 2021

I have strongly urged some of the younger folks I’ve encountered to choose to work for a good boss in a good company as they navigate their career. When offered this advice in speeches or other conversations, people who don’t believe you can choose your boss often challenge me. While acknowledging that many folks don’t choose a good boss, it’s not correct to say you can’t. I have only had one unsuitable boss in my entire professional career, and I decided to work for him. And even in that situation, he wasn’t a bad person. We just clashed on fundamental management style.
